Russell Brand’s Police Interview Footage Explained
What Did Russell Brand Tell Detectives When They Asked About Consent?
Russell Brand told police he had led “a very promiscuous life” and had “never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity”. Across four interviews, he gave prepared statements. When detectives put specific allegations to him, he said he had nothing to add. At trial, the jury heard details about individual encounters that he had left out of those statements.
The Metropolitan Police released footage from Brand’s July 2025 interview after the verdicts on 5 November 2026. The court heard material from interviews spanning nearly two years. One distinction matters when watching the clip or sharing a quote from it. Brand’s widely reported description of his promiscuous past appeared in a statement he gave in November 2023. The released footage comes from his fourth interview, on 17 July 2025.
What Did Brand Say About The Woman He Could Not Recall?
In one statement, Brand said police had given him a short summary of an allegation concerning an encounter more than 19 years earlier. He said his solicitors had asked for further information before the interview and were still waiting for answers. The jury also heard that police had supplied no photographs of the complainants in advance.
Brand told officers he could recall neither the woman’s name nor meeting her. He nevertheless allowed for the possibility that they had met and had consensual sex. The wording matters here. He was offering detectives a possible explanation for an encounter he said he could not remember. A recollection of what the woman said or did on that occasion would have been a different kind of answer.
He also challenged the way allegations had emerged following the September 2023 television documentary and newspaper investigation. Brand claimed the publicity and subsequent appeals for information had led to encounters being “invented or reimagined”. That was his accusation about the accounts given to police. The women gave their own evidence, and the jury went on to convict him of offences against four women.
What Did He Say About Kissing Fans?
In a December 2023 statement, Brand told detectives he had kissed hundreds of people at public events. He described his approach to fans as “friendly, consensual and warm”. He referred to press appearances, live shows and book signings where people took photographs, and said he knew that something he did in public could appear in the tabloids.
That answer gives a sense of how he framed his conduct for investigators. Asked about allegations involving individual women, he described how he generally behaved around fans. A photograph could establish that a kiss took place at a public event. Whether a particular woman wanted him to kiss or touch her was a question about that encounter.
What Was In The July 2025 Interview?
The four interview dates given in court were 16 November 2023, 14 December 2023, 17 January 2024 and 17 July 2025. In his 2025 statement, Brand said he had experienced sexual encounters in “countless” places and circumstances. He repeated his denial of sexual activity without consent.
The public footage is an extract. The account above draws on statements reported from court as well as reporting on the video’s release. A complete, word-for-word transcript of the released clip could not be verified, so the earlier statements should be attributed to their own dates.
Why Did The Interviews Matter At Trial?
The interviews gave the jury something it could compare with Brand’s later evidence. When he spoke to detectives, he had already denied wrongdoing. What changed in the witness box was the amount of detail he offered about particular women and encounters.
One example involved the telephone number of the woman who accused him of anal rape. During cross-examination, prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC challenged Brand about the eight months she said had passed before he mentioned storing the woman’s number. That was a specific point the jury could examine. It could consider when Brand first supplied the detail, what he had been asked before then and how he explained the gap.
The judge returned to that issue when directing the jury. Brand had been cautioned before questioning. The caution warned him that leaving something out could harm his defence if he later relied on it in court. Jurors were asked to assess his explanation for omitting details relevant to the three rape allegations.
On 5 November 2026, the jury found Brand guilty of one rape and three sexual assaults. His police interviews preserve the denial he gave detectives. The verdicts record the jury’s findings after hearing the women’s accounts, Brand’s evidence and the rest of the case.
