China’s Humanoid Robot Breaks The Nine-Second Barrier In Extraordinary 100m Sprint
A Chinese humanoid robot has run 100 metres in just 8.86 seconds, producing a time faster than the recognised human world record set by Usain Bolt. Tiangong Ultra achieved the extraordinary result during a large-size humanoid 100m semifinal at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing on Tuesday, August 25.
The number matters because Bolt’s 9.58-second run in Berlin in 2009 remains the official men’s 100m world record. Tiangong Ultra therefore covered the competition distance 0.72 seconds faster on the clock than the quickest officially recognised human 100m performance in history.
From 9.39 Seconds To 8.86
Tiangong Ultra had already caused a stir earlier in the World Humanoid Robot Games when it completed a 100m heat in 9.39 seconds. The new 8.86-second performance represents an improvement of more than half a second within the same competition and pushes the machine decisively below the symbolic nine-second barrier.
That rate of improvement is arguably more significant than the comparison with Bolt itself. The inaugural World Humanoid Robot Games only took place in 2025, yet the machines being demonstrated in Beijing are already moving at speeds that would have seemed extraordinary for bipedal robots only a short time ago.
The 2026 competition is being staged at Beijing’s National Speed Skating Oval from August 22 to 26. Official Beijing information says 2,056 robots from 666 teams registered for this year’s event, with 51 events and 1,301 competition sessions planned across sporting and real-world challenges.
Faster Than Bolt Does Not Mean Bolt Has Lost His Record
The headline comparison is irresistible, but there is an important distinction. Bolt remains the holder of the men’s human 100m world record because a robot competing in a robotics event cannot replace a World Athletics record established by a human athlete.
Bolt ran 9.58 seconds at Berlin’s Olympiastadion on August 16, 2009, with a legal +0.9 metres-per-second following wind. More than 17 years later, that remains the fastest recognised human performance over the distance.
Tiangong Ultra’s 8.86 should therefore be understood as a remarkable robotics performance measured over the same nominal distance, rather than a new athletics world record. The machines and humans operate under completely different competitive rules, physical constraints and governing systems.
But the comparison still illustrates something important. Engineers have now built a recognisably humanoid machine capable of moving between a 100m start and finish line in less time than any officially recognised human athlete ever has.
China Is Using Sport To Accelerate The Robot Race
Tiangong Ultra was developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Centre, placing its performance within a much larger Chinese effort to turn humanoid robotics from an experimental technology into a major industry. The Games themselves increasingly resemble a public testing ground for that ambition.
Running races offer something laboratory demonstrations often cannot: an instantly understandable benchmark. Anyone can grasp the significance of 100 metres, and comparing a machine’s time with the most famous sprinter in history turns an engineering improvement into something millions of people can immediately understand.
Yet Beijing’s plans extend far beyond creating spectacular robot athletes. Official descriptions of the 2026 Games include robots being tested in factories, hotels, homes, emergency-response environments and retail settings, with organisers explicitly seeking to push machines towards practical real-world applications.
That is where the commercial stakes become much larger. A robot capable of sprinting at extreme speed may create headlines, but industries ultimately need machines that can navigate messy environments, manipulate objects, respond to unexpected situations and perform useful tasks safely for long periods.
Speed Is Not The Same As Intelligence
The 8.86-second run demonstrates impressive mechanical performance, control and balance. It does not mean humanoid robots have suddenly surpassed humans in general physical ability, judgment or intelligence.
A sprint is a highly constrained challenge. Real life demands far more: opening unfamiliar doors, recognising fragile objects, responding when something goes wrong, communicating with humans and adapting to environments that were not designed specifically for a competition.
That distinction may determine whether the current humanoid boom becomes a genuine technological revolution or remains dominated by spectacular demonstrations. The real prize is not a machine that wins a 100m race. It is a machine capable of reliably doing useful work.
The Pace Of Progress Is The Real Story
That is why Tiangong Ultra’s biggest achievement may not be beating a famous human number. It is how rapidly the number itself is falling.
The robot went from 9.39 seconds to 8.86 seconds during the same edition of the Games. The sport surrounding humanoid machines is evolving at a pace that exposes engineering weaknesses publicly, creates direct competition between developers and provides easily measurable targets for improvement.
China has also dramatically expanded the event. Official figures show participation rising to more than 2,000 robots while the programme has expanded into dozens of sporting and scenario-based competitions designed to test not merely speed but increasingly sophisticated physical capabilities.
Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second record still belongs exactly where it always has: at the summit of human sprinting. But a humanoid machine completing the same headline distance in 8.86 seconds creates a different landmark — and perhaps a more unsettling question for the years ahead. If robots are already progressing this quickly in tasks humans can easily measure, the more important breakthroughs may come when their abilities become useful enough that people stop treating them as sporting curiosities at all.
