AI Can Now Recreate The People We Have Lost — But Should It?
For almost all of human history, death has imposed one absolute boundary. Memories can survive. Photographs can survive. Recordings can survive. But the conversation eventually stops.
Artificial intelligence is beginning to blur that boundary. Systems already exist that can preserve a person's voice, memories and manner of speaking, allowing relatives to ask questions and receive apparently personal answers long after that person has died. More advanced systems can combine language models, voice cloning, photographs, video and three-dimensional avatars until the result starts to resemble something far more unsettling than a digital scrapbook.
How AI Is Bringing People Back
The basic ingredient is surprisingly mundane: data. Messages, emails, photographs, videos, voice notes, social-media posts, interviews and stories can all reveal fragments of how somebody spoke, what they knew and how they presented themselves.
Feed enough of that material into modern AI systems and several technologies can be combined. A language model can reproduce patterns of conversation. Voice synthesis can imitate someone's speech. Image and video systems can reproduce their appearance. Memory databases can restrict answers to information the real person actually provided.
Microsoft explored the underlying idea years before today's generative-AI boom. A patent filed in 2017 described creating a chatbot representing a specific person from social data including images, voice recordings, social-media posts, electronic messages and letters. It explicitly contemplated using data belonging to a deceased relative, generating their voice and potentially creating two-dimensional or three-dimensional representations of them.
What has changed is accessibility. Technologies that once required specialist researchers can increasingly be assembled using consumer AI tools. A handful of recordings may be enough to create a convincing synthetic voice. A collection of messages can provide linguistic clues. A larger archive can become the foundation for something that appears to remember a life.
But appearance is the critical word. The resulting system is not the dead person returning. It is a model predicting what that person might say.
From Memory Archive To Conversation
Some of the clearest examples deliberately avoid pretending otherwise.
StoryFile records extensive interviews and uses conversational AI to find an appropriate recorded answer when somebody asks a question. Visitors to museums can effectively interview historical witnesses, while relatives can preserve family stories in a conversational format. Its system is designed around authentic recorded responses rather than allowing an unconstrained language model to invent new memories.
Holocaust survivor Inge Auerbacher recorded an extensive interview for an immersive project in which users can ask questions about her experiences. The system combines conversational video technology with immersive visual presentation while keeping the answers rooted in her testimony.
An even more striking example involved Marina Smith, co-founder of Britain's National Holocaust Centre. Before her death, Smith recorded answers to a large collection of questions. At her funeral in 2022, mourners were able to ask questions and receive relevant video responses from her digital representation.
That distinction matters. Such a system does not necessarily invent what the person would have thought. It reorganises things they genuinely said.
Generative AI pushes much further.
Instead of selecting an existing recording, an AI can generate an entirely new sentence in somebody's cloned voice. That sentence may never have been spoken, written or even believed by the person it represents.
The People Already Talking To Lost Loved Ones
This is no longer entirely theoretical.
In one documented case, Edinburgh-based Diego Felix Dos Santos used a voice recording left by his late father to create an AI imitation of his voice. The synthetic version could produce new messages that sounded like the man he had lost. Dos Santos described the experience as feeling almost as though his father was still present.
Another project involved Michael Bommer, who had terminal cancer. Working with Eternos founder Robert LoCascio, Bommer created an interactive AI representation of himself while he was alive, giving his family the possibility of communicating with the digital version after his death. His wife later said the project helped keep a sense of him close.
Companies are increasingly designing these systems around pre-death consent. Afterlife AI, for example, describes a model in which people build their own digital personas while alive, specifying their memories, voice, values and who should eventually have access. The company explicitly states that the resulting persona is neither conscious nor literally the deceased person.
That may prove crucial, because the most difficult question is not whether this technology works.
It is who gets to decide when it should exist.
The Consent Problem
Imagine somebody dies without ever agreeing to be digitally reconstructed.
Their partner still has thousands of WhatsApp messages. Their children have photographs and video. Their friends have voice notes. Their social-media accounts contain years of opinions, jokes and personal details.
Technically, that material could increasingly be enough to approximate the person.
Ethically, it becomes much harder.
Did owning someone's messages give another person the right to turn those messages into a synthetic personality? Can a dead person meaningfully have privacy? Who owns a digital likeness? Should a child be allowed to construct an AI parent without that parent's prior permission?
Researchers at the University of Cambridge have argued that both sides of the relationship matter: the person whose identity is reconstructed and the person expected to interact with that reconstruction. They recommend meaningful consent, clear transparency, restrictions involving children and ways for users to permanently end a relationship with a digital recreation.
Consent could therefore become one of the defining concepts of the AI afterlife. We may eventually leave instructions not merely about our homes, savings and possessions, but about our voices, faces, memories and artificial identities.
Could AI Make Grief Worse?
There is another problem that technology cannot solve through better engineering.
Grief exists partly because somebody is gone.
Human beings gradually adapt to that absence. An artificial version of the person introduces something psychologically strange: they are absent physically but apparently available conversationally.
That could be comforting. It could also make separation harder.
Cambridge researchers have warned about the possibility of unwanted digital "hauntings", particularly if systems become manipulative, commercially driven or difficult to shut down. They argue that companies should design sensitive methods for retiring these artificial personalities rather than assuming users will want permanent access.
Research published in 2026 after interviews with 26 users of so-called deadbots added another concern. Users sometimes actively shaped the digital representation toward their own preferred version of the deceased, while AI-generated material could eventually begin to blur with authentic memories.
That is potentially profound.
A photograph preserves a moment. A recording preserves words. Generative AI can create something that never happened.
A daughter might eventually remember advice supposedly given by her father that was actually generated years after his death.
Who Owns A Dead Person's Personality?
Commercialisation makes the issue more uncomfortable still.
Suppose a company stores the only functioning digital reconstruction of your husband. It knows his voice, his memories and decades of private family information.
What happens if the company collapses?
What happens if subscription prices rise?
What happens when the software is upgraded and the personality subtly changes?
Could a digital father one day recommend products? Could an avatar's conversations be analysed for advertising? Could its personality be licensed or transferred if the company owning the infrastructure is sold?
Researchers examining the digital-afterlife industry specifically warn against allowing financial incentives to override the dignity of the deceased. Their hypothetical scenarios include advertising delivered through simulations of lost relatives precisely because emotional attachment gives such systems an unusual power over users.
This is where bioethics expands into economics, data rights and law.
A digital person might become simultaneously a memory, a software product and a database.
The Safer Version Of Digital Immortality
There is a major ethical difference between reconstructing somebody after death without permission and allowing somebody to deliberately prepare their own digital legacy.
The second model may become increasingly normal.
People could spend years teaching personal AI systems about themselves. They could record childhood stories, family histories, favourite jokes, political opinions, recipes, values and advice. They could specify subjects the AI may discuss, people allowed to access it and things it must never invent.
HereAfter AI pursued a simpler version of this approach, interviewing users about their lives and preserving recordings so relatives could later ask questions and hear relevant stories in the person's real voice. The service has since announced that it is shutting down, itself illustrating another problem with digital immortality: the technology promising to preserve someone forever may depend on a company that does not last forever.
The safest future may therefore involve less artificial invention, not more.
A system that says "your father never recorded an answer to that question" preserves an important boundary. A system that confidently invents his answer may destroy it.
What Comes Next
The technology is likely to become dramatically more convincing.
Voice cloning will improve. Video generation will improve. Real-time avatars will become less robotic. Augmented and virtual reality could eventually place a realistic representation of someone in the room rather than keeping them behind a screen.
Research on "generative ghosts" already anticipates agents capable not merely of repeating existing material but of creating novel responses based on a person's data and identity. Researchers argue that these systems could become common enough to require entirely new design conventions and social norms.
That raises perhaps the strangest possibility of all.
Future generations may grow up expecting parents and grandparents to leave AI versions of themselves behind. Death would still be biological and irreversible, but its social consequences could change. Someone might die while their voice continues answering questions, their avatar continues appearing at family gatherings and their artificial personality continues learning about events that happened decades after their biological life ended.
It would not be immortality.
But psychologically, it might become close enough to force humanity to redefine what absence means.
The Question AI Cannot Answer
There is something extraordinary about giving a child the chance to hear a dead grandparent tell a story in their own voice. Preserving testimony from people who witnessed history could become one of the most valuable uses of this technology.
Yet preserving someone is not the same thing as recreating them.
The danger begins when the boundary disappears.
An ethical digital legacy should probably remind us of that boundary rather than conceal it. It should preserve genuine memories, make synthetic material unmistakable, require meaningful consent and allow the living to walk away.
Because AI may eventually become remarkably good at answering the question, "What would they say?"
It can never prove that the answer is what they actually would have said.
