Tonight’s Solar Eclipse Will Hide Up To 96% Of The Sun Over Britain
Britain will witness its most dramatic solar eclipse in years this evening as the Moon moves across the Sun and hides roughly 88% to 96.5% of its visible disc, depending on location. The spectacle begins shortly after 6pm BST, reaches its peak just after 7pm and ends by about 8.10pm.
This will not be a total eclipse anywhere in the UK: a brilliant crescent of sunlight will remain visible throughout. Yet the event is exceptionally deep, giving millions of people a chance to see daylight weaken, colours become muted and the familiar circle of the Sun turn into a narrow inverted crescent low in the western sky.
What Time Is The Solar Eclipse Tonight In The UK?
The first sign of the eclipse arrives in Edinburgh and Glasgow at about 6.08pm BST. Belfast follows at around 6.10pm, Leeds at 6.12pm, Manchester and Liverpool at 6.13pm, Birmingham at 6.15pm, Cardiff at 6.16pm, London at 6.17pm and Cornwall at about 6.18pm.
Maximum coverage comes between approximately 7.05pm and 7.16pm. It peaks around 7.05pm in Edinburgh, 7.06pm in Glasgow, 7.08pm in Belfast, 7.10pm in Manchester and Liverpool, 7.11pm in Birmingham, 7.13pm in Cardiff and London, and 7.16pm in Truro.
The Moon then moves away from the Sun, with the eclipse ending between 8pm and 8.10pm. Because the Sun will be low, viewers should find an unobstructed view towards the west or west-northwest and arrive well before the peak rather than trying to locate it at the last moment.
How Much Of The Sun Will Disappear?
The effect becomes stronger towards the South West, which lies closer to the narrow path where the eclipse becomes total. Bishop Rock in the Isles of Scilly is expected to reach about 96.5% coverage, while Land’s End should see approximately 95.8% and Lizard Point about 95.6%.
Cardiff should reach roughly 93.2%, Belfast 93.1%, Birmingham and Liverpool 91.8%, London, Manchester and Glasgow about 91.4%, and Edinburgh around 90.7%. Even the far north-east remains in a deep partial eclipse, with the Sun in Shetland expected to be close to 88% covered.
Those percentages describe the area of the Sun’s visible disc hidden by the Moon. They do not mean Britain will become 90% darker, because the remaining photosphere is intensely bright and human vision adapts to changing light levels. The surroundings may look eerily subdued, but the sky will not fall into the darkness produced by totality.
The Science Behind What Is Happening
A solar eclipse occurs when a new Moon passes between Earth and the Sun and casts its shadow towards our planet. People inside the shadow’s dark central core, called the umbra, see the Sun completely covered; those inside the much larger outer shadow, the penumbra, see only part of it hidden.
The UK sits inside the penumbra tonight, while the umbra sweeps across remote northern Russia, Greenland, western Iceland, the North Atlantic, northern Spain and a small part of Portugal. Viewers along that narrow route can experience totality for up to about two minutes and 18 seconds, but Britain is several hundred miles outside it.
The Moon can cover the Sun because of a remarkable coincidence of scale. The Sun is roughly 400 times wider than the Moon but also about 400 times farther away, making the two bodies appear almost the same size from Earth. Small changes in distance and viewing position therefore determine whether an observer sees totality, a bright ring or a partial eclipse.
Why Does A Solar Eclipse Not Happen Every Month?
There is a new Moon roughly once every 29.5 days, but its orbit is tilted by about five degrees relative to Earth’s path around the Sun. Most months, the Moon passes slightly above or below the Sun from our viewpoint and its shadow misses Earth entirely.
Eclipses become possible only during limited periods when the Moon crosses the plane of Earth’s orbit near the time of a new Moon. This alignment creates an eclipse season, but even then the central shadow traces only a narrow corridor across the planet.
That narrowness explains why total solar eclipses are both common globally and rare locally. One occurs somewhere on Earth about every year and a half, yet the same location experiences totality only about once every 375 years on average.
How Rare Is Tonight’s Eclipse For Britain?
For Britain as a whole, this is among the most substantial eclipse events since the total eclipse of 11 August 1999, which crossed Cornwall and parts of Devon. Some areas of Scotland experienced an even deeper partial eclipse in March 2015, but tonight’s event is unusual because almost the entire country receives a strikingly high level of coverage at an accessible evening hour.
The next eclipse to approach totality from the British Isles arrives on 3 September 2081, when as much as 99% of the Sun may be obscured in parts of southern Britain. The next total solar eclipse visible from the UK is not expected until 23 September 2090, placing tonight’s spectacle firmly in once-in-a-generation territory for most people watching from Britain.
What Will It Look And Feel Like?
The Moon will appear to take an increasing bite from the right side of the Sun before moving from right to left across it. At maximum eclipse, the exposed sunlight should resemble a thin downward-facing arc rather than the upright crescent many people expect.
As the eclipse deepens, the quality of daylight may become flatter and more metallic, while temperatures can dip as less solar energy reaches the ground. Tiny crescent images may appear beneath leafy trees or through the holes of a colander because each gap acts as a pinhole projector.
The low angle adds drama but also creates a practical obstacle. Buildings, hills, trees and distant cloud can all block the Sun, so a familiar sunset viewpoint, open coastline or elevated position with a clear western horizon offers the strongest chance of seeing the full sequence.
Will The Weather Cooperate?
The latest Met Office outlook favours central, southern and eastern England and Wales, where largely clear skies are expected through much of the evening. Some cloud is possible in the West Midlands, although breaks should still give many viewers a chance.
Conditions look less reliable across northern England and Scotland, while Northern Ireland faces the greatest risk of extensive cloud. Forecasts can change locally, and even a thin cloud layer does not make looking directly at the Sun safe.
How To Watch Without Damaging Your Eyes
Nobody in the UK will experience a safe naked-eye phase because the Sun will remain partially visible everywhere. Ordinary sunglasses, smoked glass and improvised filters are not protective enough; proper eclipse glasses or handheld viewers should comply with the ISO 12312-2 safety standard and must be free from scratches, tears or damage.
Cameras, binoculars and telescopes require a purpose-made solar filter secured over the front of the optics. Wearing eclipse glasses while looking through unfiltered magnifying equipment is dangerous because concentrated sunlight can overwhelm the filter and cause severe eye injury.
The safest equipment-free alternative is indirect projection. A pinhole projector, the holes in a colander or the small gaps between leaves can cast multiple crescent-shaped images onto the ground or a sheet of card, allowing the eclipse to be observed without looking at the Sun.
Britain’s Brief Encounter With The Moon’s Shadow
Tonight’s eclipse is not total, but it is far beyond an ordinary partial event. For roughly two hours, the geometry of three worlds will become visible in the evening sky, with the South West coming tantalisingly close to the narrow band of darkness crossing the Atlantic and Europe.
The practical window is simple: be in position before 7pm BST, look towards a clear western horizon and use genuine solar protection throughout. Clouds may decide who sees it, but Britain will not be offered another eclipse this deep for decades.
