El Niño Could Become Historic: The Global Weather Pattern Governments Are Preparing For

UN Warns El Niño Is ‘Supersizing Before Our Eyes’ as World Faces Extraordinary Weather Threat

One of the planet’s most powerful natural climate patterns is rapidly intensifying, with the United Nations warning that El Niño is being “supersized before our eyes” as extraordinarily warm Pacific waters threaten to reshape weather across much of the world.

The World Meteorological Organization says there is now an exceptionally high probability — approaching 100 per cent — that El Niño will persist through February 2027. It is expected to strengthen into a very powerful event towards the end of 2026, increasing the chances of severe heat, drought, flooding and disrupted rainfall thousands of miles from the tropical Pacific where it originates.

This does not mean every drought, storm or heatwave over the coming months will be caused by El Niño. Nor does an exceptionally strong El Niño guarantee catastrophe everywhere. What it does mean is that one of the largest natural forces capable of reorganising the global atmosphere is entering an unusually intense phase at the same time as oceans and the wider climate system are already extremely warm.

What Is El Niño?

El Niño is the warm phase of a natural climate cycle known as the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, or ENSO. It begins when unusually warm surface water spreads across the central and eastern tropical Pacific and interacts with changes in atmospheric pressure and the trade winds.

Under more typical conditions, easterly trade winds push warm surface water towards Indonesia and Australia. Colder, nutrient-rich water rises closer to the South American coast to replace it.

During El Niño, that system weakens or reorganises. Warm water shifts eastwards across the Pacific, ocean temperatures rise across a huge area and the location of tropical thunderstorms changes.

That apparently remote movement of heat matters because the tropical Pacific covers an enormous area. Changes there influence the jet stream and atmospheric circulation, shifting where storms form, where rain falls and where dry weather becomes more likely.

This is why El Niño can contribute to flooding in one region while increasing drought risk in another. It is less like a single weather event and more like somebody changing the settings on part of the global climate machine.

Why Scientists Are So Concerned About This El Niño

The latest measurements are exceptional.

WMO says the widely monitored Niño 3.4 region of the tropical Pacific averaged roughly 1.5°C above normal between May and July 2026. By July it had reached about 2°C above normal, while weekly readings later climbed into roughly the 2.2°C to 2.6°C range.

Even more striking is what is happening beneath the surface. In some areas, subsurface Pacific temperatures during July and early August were more than 8°C above average, providing a huge reservoir of heat capable of sustaining further intensification.

WMO's latest multi-model forecast estimates the Niño 3.4 anomaly could average approximately 3.6°C during September to November 2026, with intensification expected to peak around November or December.

NOAA is also sounding an unusually strong warning. Its latest assessment gives El Niño a greater than 90 per cent chance of becoming very strong during the Northern Hemisphere autumn and winter, and estimates a 69 per cent probability that its strength will reach a level exceeding previous events in its historical record dating to 1950 under the agency's specified measure.

That does not prove this will become the most destructive El Niño ever experienced. Meteorological strength and human consequences are not the same thing.

A slightly weaker event hitting highly vulnerable countries can inflict considerably more suffering than a stronger event whose worst rainfall anomalies occur somewhere better prepared.

El Niño Does Not Create the Same Weather Everywhere

One of the easiest mistakes is to imagine El Niño simply makes the planet hotter and wetter.

Its effects are far more complicated.

Some regions can become substantially wetter, creating increased flood and landslide risks. Elsewhere, rainfall can weaken, threatening water supplies and agriculture.

WMO's September-to-November outlook indicates above-normal temperatures are favoured across almost every major land region, alongside rainfall patterns increasingly resembling the classic atmospheric fingerprint associated with a strong El Niño.

Another climate phenomenon is complicating the picture. A positive Indian Ocean Dipole is also forecast to develop, while tropical Atlantic waters remain warmer than normal. These systems can reinforce, weaken or distort normal El Niño patterns depending on the region.

That uncertainty is crucial. Scientists are considerably more confident that El Niño will be extremely strong than they are about the exact rainfall total a particular city or country will receive months from now.

The Biggest Geopolitical Risk May Be Food

The most important consequence may not appear first on a weather map.

It could appear in supermarkets, grain markets and government budgets.

Drought can destroy harvests and livestock. Floods can ruin crops, roads, storage facilities and transport networks. Extreme heat can reduce agricultural productivity. Together, those effects can reduce supply and push prices upwards.

The World Food Programme says the developing El Niño could become one of the strongest on record and warns that its consequences may dramatically worsen existing food insecurity. Its modelling projects 274 million people across 45 countries could face acute food insecurity by the end of 2027, around 49 million more than today's level.

That figure should not be interpreted as 49 million people becoming hungry solely because of El Niño. Wars, poverty, displacement, inflation, energy costs and weak governments are already driving many of these crises.

El Niño acts as a threat multiplier.

A country suffering conflict can survive a bad harvest less easily than a wealthy, peaceful country with strong infrastructure and financial reserves. A government already subsidising energy and food may have less room to absorb another commodity-price shock.

Food Prices Could Become Political Prices

This is where climate begins turning into geopolitics.

A failed harvest does not remain confined to a farm.

Food-producing states may restrict exports to protect domestic supplies. Import-dependent countries may have to pay more. Governments may increase subsidies. National budgets deteriorate. Inflation rises.

Those pressures can rapidly become political.

The World Bank entered 2026 expecting relatively stable global food commodity conditions, but warned in June that El Niño, higher energy and fertiliser costs, biofuel demand and possible trade restrictions could push food prices materially above existing forecasts.

This matters especially across countries where households spend a large proportion of their income on food.

A 10 or 20 per cent increase in staple prices might be irritating in a wealthy household. In communities already close to subsistence, it can mean removing meals entirely.

History repeatedly shows that major increases in the price and availability of basic commodities can intensify existing political grievances. Climate shocks rarely create revolutions or wars by themselves, but they can make fragile political systems considerably less stable.

Migration And Conflict Could Be Amplified

The same mechanism applies to migration.

When prolonged drought eliminates agricultural income, families move. When floods repeatedly destroy homes, people relocate. When food becomes unaffordable, economic migration increases.

Most climate-related displacement initially occurs within countries rather than across international borders, but large regional shocks can eventually increase cross-border movement.

That creates another geopolitical feedback loop.

Neighbouring countries face additional housing, employment and public-service pressures. Border politics hardens. Governments fight over aid budgets and migration policy. Extremist or populist movements can exploit frustration.

Again, El Niño does not automatically cause mass migration or conflict.

But if severe weather strikes countries already experiencing war, debt problems, political instability or hunger, it can remove whatever margin of safety remained.

Governments Are Preparing Before Disaster Arrives

One important difference from historic disasters is that scientists can see this one developing months in advance.

That gives governments an opportunity.

WMO has begun what it describes as an exceptional mobilisation involving national meteorological and hydrological services, designed to improve forecasting and early warning ahead of the strongest impacts.

The World Food Programme and Food and Agriculture Organization are also pursuing anticipatory measures across vulnerable countries, including cash support, drought- and flood-resistant seeds, livestock protection, improved water storage and flood infrastructure. A joint initiative is seeking to protect nearly nine million people across 22 countries.

The logic is straightforward.

Spending money protecting livestock before a drought is cheaper than replacing entire livelihoods afterwards. Evacuating communities before a flood is safer than mounting rescues during it. Pre-positioning food before roads disappear can prevent humanitarian crises from spiralling.

El Niño may therefore become an enormous test of whether increasingly sophisticated climate forecasts can actually produce equally sophisticated political action.

Does Climate Change Make El Niño Worse?

El Niño itself is natural. It existed long before industrial greenhouse-gas emissions became a major influence on Earth's climate.

But it no longer operates within the climate of centuries past.

The atmosphere and oceans are warmer, meaning El Niño is now interacting with a climate system carrying considerably more heat.

That distinction matters.

Climate change does not simply “cause” an individual El Niño. Instead, human-driven warming changes the background conditions against which natural variability operates.

El Niño can temporarily push global temperatures higher by transferring additional ocean heat into the atmosphere, while long-term greenhouse warming raises the baseline beneath that natural cycle.

The combination can produce exceptionally warm global periods.

It is one reason António Guterres warned that the planet was entering what he described as a danger zone of extreme weather as El Niño intensified.

Could 2027 Become Exceptionally Hot?

Possibly.

El Niño events frequently influence global temperatures most strongly with a delay, meaning some of the consequences of an event peaking late in 2026 could persist into the following year.

That makes 2027 particularly important.

But claims that it definitely will become the hottest year ever should be treated cautiously. Global annual temperatures will depend on the evolution of El Niño, regional ocean temperatures, atmospheric conditions and longer-term climate trends.

What scientists can say with substantially greater confidence is that elevated global temperatures are likely to accompany the current event.

WMO's immediate seasonal forecast already favours above-normal temperatures across almost all land regions through the Northern Hemisphere autumn.

Could El Niño Become Even Stronger?

The next few months will determine exactly how extraordinary this event becomes.

El Niño commonly peaks around the Northern Hemisphere winter. Current forecasts point towards further strengthening before a likely peak around November or December 2026, followed eventually by weakening.

What happens afterwards becomes progressively harder to forecast.

El Niño events eventually collapse as Pacific ocean-atmosphere dynamics change, sometimes returning to neutral conditions and sometimes eventually swinging towards La Niña.

Their effects can outlive the ocean anomaly itself.

Destroyed harvests cannot be restored when Pacific temperatures normalise. Reservoirs do not refill instantly. Livestock populations take time to recover. Food prices can remain elevated. Damaged infrastructure must be rebuilt.

That means the humanitarian and geopolitical footprint of the 2026 El Niño could remain visible long after meteorologists declare the event finished.

The Real Threat Is Several Crises Arriving Together

El Niño alone is unlikely to produce some single worldwide catastrophe.

That is arguably the wrong way to understand the danger.

The serious possibility is simultaneous disruption.

Imagine drought hitting one major agricultural region while floods damage another, energy prices remain elevated, fertiliser costs rise and governments respond by restricting food exports.

Then add existing wars, fragile states, heavy sovereign debt and humanitarian agencies already struggling for funding.

Each problem strengthens the others.

That interconnected vulnerability is what makes a powerful El Niño geopolitically important. Weather becomes agriculture. Agriculture becomes prices. Prices become inflation. Inflation becomes political pressure. Political pressure can become unrest, migration, protectionism or instability.

The ocean temperature anomaly may begin thousands of kilometres from the world's major capitals, but its economic and political consequences do not respect borders.

What Happens Next

The crucial period will run through the final months of 2026 as Pacific temperatures approach their projected peak.

Scientists will watch not simply the headline strength of the Niño indices but changes to atmospheric circulation and regional rainfall. Governments will watch reservoirs, harvest forecasts, commodity markets and emergency-response systems.

Humanitarian organisations will watch countries where almost no margin for another shock remains.

There is an unusual advantage: this crisis is not arriving without warning.

The world has increasingly accurate seasonal forecasts, satellite observations, ocean buoys, crop monitoring and sophisticated climate models. Scientists can already see the threat developing months before many of its biggest effects are expected.

That makes what happens next partly a test of meteorology — but increasingly a test of governments.

If preparations work, an exceptionally strong El Niño does not have to produce an exceptionally large humanitarian disaster.

If drought, floods, food shortages and price shocks arrive faster than political systems prepare for them, however, the most consequential story of this El Niño may eventually have very little to do with the weather itself.
