Eclipse Puts Britain’s Power Grid on Alert During Evening Peak
Britain’s electricity system operator has asked power producers to make additional capacity available as one of the deepest solar eclipses visible from the UK in decades arrives during this evening’s peak demand period. The eclipse will unfold between roughly 6pm and 8.10pm BST today, Wednesday 12 August, with maximum coverage shortly after 7pm.
The National Energy System Operator has issued an Electricity Margin Notice covering the crucial period between 6pm and 8pm. It has stressed that the move is precautionary and that there is no identified risk to customers’ electricity supplies.
What Time Is the Eclipse Tonight?
The precise timing depends on location, but the Moon will begin moving across the Sun shortly after 6pm throughout the UK. Maximum coverage will occur between approximately 7.05pm and 7.16pm, before the eclipse ends between 8pm and 8.10pm.
In Edinburgh and Glasgow, the eclipse begins at around 6.08pm, peaks near 7.05pm and ends at approximately 8pm. Manchester and Liverpool should see first contact at 6.13pm and maximum coverage at 7.10pm, while Birmingham and Norwich reach the peak about one minute later.
London, Bristol and Cardiff will see the eclipse begin at approximately 6.17pm, reach its maximum at around 7.12pm and finish at about 8.06pm. In Truro, where coverage will be among the deepest in Britain, it begins near 6.18pm, peaks at approximately 7.16pm and ends at 8.10pm.
What Will People in Britain See?
The UK is outside the narrow path of totality, so the Sun will not disappear completely. Instead, between about 90% and 96% of its visible disc will be obscured, leaving a bright crescent of sunlight at the eclipse’s maximum.
South-west England will experience the greatest coverage, with approximately 95% of the Sun hidden around Plymouth and Cornwall. Cardiff and Belfast should see about 93%, Manchester around 92% and London just over 91%, while much of Scotland will still experience coverage above 90%.
The change should be unmistakable if the sky is clear. Daylight will become muted, shadows may sharpen and the temperature could dip, but Britain will not experience the complete darkness associated with a total eclipse. The atmosphere should resemble an unusually rapid transition towards dusk before the light returns.
The Sun will already be relatively low in the western sky. Viewers should therefore find an open location with a clear western horizon rather than somewhere surrounded by buildings, hills or tall trees.
Where Will the Eclipse Be Visible?
The eclipse is astronomically visible from every part of the UK, but cloud cover will decide how much individual viewers actually see. Current forecasts favour central, southern and eastern parts of England and Wales, where skies are expected to remain largely clear through the evening.
The West Midlands may experience some cloud, although breaks should still give many people an opportunity to see at least part of the event. Conditions are less promising across northern England and much of Scotland, while extensive cloud could make Northern Ireland the most difficult place from which to watch.
Even where the Sun is hidden by cloud, people may notice the wider fall in daylight. However, cloud must never be treated as eye protection because damaging solar radiation can still reach the retina.
Why Does an Eclipse Affect the Electricity Grid?
Britain now receives a meaningful share of its daytime electricity from solar panels. When the Moon moves across the Sun, thousands of large solar installations and rooftop systems lose output at almost the same time.
The central expectation is that British solar generation could fall by roughly 700 megawatts, although modelling based on previous conditions suggests that the reduction could be considerably greater. Across Europe, system operators have prepared for a potential solar-power decline of as much as 9.7 gigawatts.
The unusual challenge is not simply the total quantity of electricity lost. It is the speed and coordination of the decline: solar output falls across several countries together and then begins recovering, forcing grid operators to balance the system through gas generation, batteries, imports and changes in demand.
Tonight’s timing adds pressure because the eclipse overlaps with the evening period when people return home, cook, use appliances and switch on cooling equipment during hot weather. At the same time, ordinary sunset is already pushing solar production down for the night.
Does the Notice Mean Britain Could Face Blackouts?
No blackout warning has been issued. An Electricity Margin Notice tells power companies that the system operator wants a larger cushion of spare capacity than the market has currently offered.
The notice covers a forecast shortfall of approximately 1,200 megawatts against the operating reserve NESO would prefer to have available. That does not mean demand is expected to exceed total electricity supply by that amount, nor does it mean households are about to be disconnected.
Generators can respond by declaring more capacity, while batteries, electricity imports and demand-reduction services can also support the grid. NESO describes these notices as a routine operational tool, although issuing one during summer highlights how weather, renewable generation and cross-border electricity markets are creating new balancing challenges.
A genuine power-cut risk would require the position to deteriorate substantially beyond the current notice. More serious demand-control warnings would normally follow before temporary disconnections became necessary, and no such escalation has been announced.
How to Watch the Eclipse Safely
Nobody should look directly at the Sun without equipment specifically designed for solar observation. Ordinary sunglasses, smoked glass, exposed film, phone screens and homemade filters do not provide sufficient protection.
Certified eclipse glasses should display the ISO 12312-2 safety standard and must be free from scratches, tears or other damage. Telescopes, binoculars and camera lenses require properly fitted solar filters placed over the front of the equipment; looking through magnifying optics while wearing eclipse glasses is not safe.
A pinhole projector provides a simple indirect alternative. A small hole in a piece of card can project the Sun’s changing shape onto another surface, while the holes in a colander or gaps between leaves can produce multiple crescent-shaped images on the ground.
Britain’s Most Dramatic Eclipse in a Generation
This will be the greatest proportion of the Sun obscured over the UK and Ireland since the 1999 eclipse. Totality tonight will instead pass across parts of Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain, where the Sun will disappear completely for up to approximately two minutes and 18 seconds.
For Britain, the event is both an astronomical spectacle and a carefully planned test of a changing energy system. The Moon’s shadow is entirely predictable, but its arrival during evening demand reveals why grids built around solar and wind power increasingly need storage, flexible consumption and dependable reserve generation.
If the forecast holds, millions of people will be able to watch a thin crescent of sunlight hang above the western horizon shortly after 7pm. Below it, Britain’s control rooms will be managing the same spectacle as an abrupt, nationwide shift in electricity production—one that should remain invisible to households if the system works as intended.
