A powerful ash cloud from Mount Etna has closed Sicily’s Catania Airport and disrupted flights more than 130 miles away in Malta. Nineteen Malta flights had been cancelled by Tuesday afternoon, while several others faced significant delays during one of the busiest periods of the summer travel season.

Catania Airport extended its complete suspension of arrivals and departures until 11am local time on Wednesday, 12 August. Passengers using either Catania or Malta were warned to check directly with their airlines before beginning their journeys because further cancellations could be imposed with little notice.

Explosive Activity Sends Ash South

Italy’s Etna Volcano Observatory placed the volcano on a red aviation alert as strong explosive activity continued at its summit craters. Lava was observed flowing into the Valle del Leone and Valle del Bove, while the resulting ash cloud moved south and south-west towards the Maltese Islands.

The observatory could not reliably estimate the height of the volcanic cloud in its latest aviation notice. Cameras, thermal equipment and teams stationed around the volcano were being used to track an eruption capable of changing rapidly.

Malta lies approximately 220 kilometres, or 140 miles, south of Mount Etna. That distance offered little protection once the prevailing winds began carrying ash across the Mediterranean, turning what began as a Sicilian aviation problem into a wider regional disruption.

Why Airlines Cannot Risk The Ash

Volcanic ash is composed of hard fragments of rock, minerals and volcanic glass rather than the soft residue produced by an ordinary fire. These particles can abrade windscreens and aircraft surfaces, contaminate sensors and damage vital systems.

The gravest risk comes when ash enters a jet engine. Particles can melt in the engine’s extreme heat before solidifying on internal components, restricting airflow and potentially causing a loss of power.

That danger explains why airlines may cancel flights even when conditions at an airport appear normal from the ground. An ash cloud can be difficult for pilots to distinguish from an ordinary weather cloud, while its position and concentration can change as winds shift.

KM Malta Airlines warned that volcanic and weather conditions could deteriorate with little notice. The airline said services would operate whenever conditions allowed, but flights could be delayed or cancelled close to departure if safety restrictions changed.

Holiday Travel Comes Under Pressure

The disruption has struck at the height of the Mediterranean tourism season, when Sicily and Malta are carrying some of their heaviest passenger numbers of the year. A closure at Catania can also place pressure on Sicily’s other transport links as passengers seek alternative flights, ferries, trains or lengthy transfers across the island.

Malta’s airport remained open, but ash over the islands forced airlines to make individual operational decisions. The cancellation of 19 services by mid-afternoon showed that the eruption’s consequences had already spread far beyond the volcano’s immediate surroundings.

The interruption could continue even if Mount Etna’s explosive activity weakens. Airports and airlines must also assess the movement of the existing cloud, runway contamination, aircraft positioning and the backlog created by cancelled services.

What Happens Next

The crucial variables are now the strength of the eruption and the direction of the wind. A shift away from Malta could allow its flight schedule to recover, while continued southward movement could trigger more delays and last-minute cancellations.

Catania’s planned reopening will depend on conditions being judged safe rather than the expiry of a fixed deadline. For travellers, that means a scheduled flight is not a guarantee of departure until the aircraft is cleared to operate.

Mount Etna has once again shown how quickly a local eruption can become an international transport emergency. The volcano does not need to threaten cities with lava to cause serious disruption; it only needs to put enough ash into the wrong air corridor at the busiest possible moment.
