Ten Hag Says Ronaldo ‘Let the Team Down’ as Manchester United Rift Resurfaces
Ten Hag Says He Planned Around Ronaldo Before Manchester United Relationship Collapsed
The Ronaldo–Ten Hag Divide
The former United manager blames inadequate preparation for Ronaldo’s struggles, reopening a dispute that ended with the forward’s departure in November 2022.
Erik ten Hag has accused Cristiano Ronaldo of letting Manchester United down during their brief spell together, saying the forward’s preparation prevented him from contributing as the manager expected.
In an interview published on 20 October 2026, Ten Hag said: “He let the team down, and he let me down, because we planned with him.”
The comments revisit a relationship that collapsed in 2022. They are a fresh account of an old dispute, rather than a new confrontation inside United’s dressing room.
Ten Hag’s central argument is that Ronaldo’s difficulties went beyond a disagreement about tactics. He says the forward lacked the fitness needed to perform his role. That remains the former manager’s assessment, rather than an independently established explanation for everything that went wrong.
Ten Hag Says Ronaldo Was Part of His Plans
Ten Hag’s account challenges the idea that he arrived at Old Trafford determined to remove Ronaldo.
He says he travelled to Portugal before taking charge to explain his intentions to the forward. His stated starting point was to work with one of football’s most accomplished players.
That matters because Ronaldo later described a very different experience. Before leaving United, he said he felt pushed out and believed the manager did not respect him.
The competing accounts concern more than selection. They describe a breakdown in trust between a player who expected an important role and a manager who says his original plans became unworkable.
Neither account, on its own, establishes precisely when that trust disappeared.
Why the Fitness Argument Matters
Ten Hag disputes the familiar explanation that Ronaldo struggled simply because the manager demanded too much pressing.
Pressing means trying to win possession by closing down opponents. For a forward, it can involve repeated runs towards defenders and the goalkeeper, often without touching the ball.
But Ten Hag’s criticism extends to movement when United had possession. He says Ronaldo was not consistently getting into the positions from which teammates could create chances for him.
The distinction is significant. A striker can be excused some defensive work if his attacking contribution justifies it. The argument becomes harder to sustain if the manager also doubts his ability to reach scoring positions.
Ten Hag has also claimed Ronaldo failed to complete a running exercise imposed after United’s 4–0 defeat at Brentford in August 2022. The allegation adds detail to his explanation of the relationship, but should remain attributed to him.
The material reviewed for this article does not establish Ronaldo’s response to these latest comments.
Ronaldo’s Earlier Account Included Family Illness
Ronaldo had already offered an important explanation for his disrupted preparation.
In November 2022, he said his baby daughter had been ill in hospital and that he had remained with his family rather than joining United’s pre-season tour.
United had granted him additional time away to deal with a family issue. Ronaldo nevertheless said he felt hurt because he believed senior figures had doubted his explanation.
That context prevents a fair account from treating his absence as proof of indifference.
There are two separate questions. One concerns why a player missed preparation. The other concerns whether he subsequently reached the fitness required to play.
A serious family problem can explain an absence without resolving a manager’s later assessment of readiness. Equally, a manager’s concerns about fitness do not disprove the family circumstances described by the player.
Tottenham Turned the Disagreement Into a Public Test
By October 2022, the tension had become visible during matches.
Ten Hag confirmed that Ronaldo refused to come on as a late substitute against Tottenham. The forward also left before the final whistle.
United then excluded him from the squad for the following league match against Chelsea.
For Ten Hag, the issue concerned standards across the group. Punishing a famous player demonstrated that selection decisions and instructions applied throughout the squad.
Ronaldo’s statement after the incident acknowledged that emotions could get the better of him. He also said he intended to keep working and supporting his teammates.
The episode exposed a difficult practical problem. A manager cannot reliably use a substitute who may reject the instruction to enter a match. A player who believes his role is disrespectful is unlikely to regard the same instruction as a routine selection decision.
The Interview That Preceded His Departure
The relationship deteriorated further when Ronaldo publicly criticised United in November 2022.
He said he felt betrayed and accused figures at the club of trying to force him out. He also expressed a lack of respect for Ten Hag, which he linked to how he believed the manager treated him.
On 22 November, United announced that Ronaldo would leave by mutual agreement with immediate effect.
The club’s statement thanked him for his contribution across two spells, recording 145 goals in 346 appearances.
That record explains the weight of the dispute. United were separating from a player whose achievements were embedded in the club’s recent history.
But the announcement settled his employment position, rather than deciding which participant’s account of the breakdown was correct.
What the New Comments Establish
Ten Hag has now made his explanation clearer. He says he wanted Ronaldo involved, became dissatisfied with his preparation and movement, and made selection decisions accordingly.
Ronaldo’s earlier explanation emphasised disrespect, distrust and family circumstances.
Those positions overlap in one respect: both describe a working relationship that had stopped functioning. They differ sharply over responsibility.
The latest interview gives readers more of Ten Hag’s reasoning. It does not supply a jointly accepted account, independent training records or a fresh response from Ronaldo to the specific allegations.
The unresolved issue is therefore narrower than deciding whether either man was entirely right. It is whether further evidence or a direct reply will substantiate the training claims now being used to explain one of United’s most conspicuous separations.
