Announced on 15 September 2026, the chip is MediaTek’s attempt to push further into the premium smartphone market normally associated with Apple, Qualcomm and Samsung. It is built using TSMC’s 2nm process and will sit above the 3nm Dimensity 9600M in MediaTek’s new range.

The company says the 9600 Pro improves performance and efficiency across central processing, graphics, imaging and artificial intelligence. Phones using it are expected from manufacturers including Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo. As with every chip launch, however, specifications describe potential; finished phones determine how much of that potential users actually experience.

What The 51% AI Figure Really Means

MediaTek’s 51% claim relates to LLM prefill performance. Prefill is the stage in which a language model processes the user’s prompt and surrounding context before it begins generating an answer. Faster prefill can reduce the pause before a response, especially when an assistant must read a long document, conversation or instruction.

It is not the same as saying every generative-AI task will be 51% faster. Token generation, memory capacity, software optimisation, model size, storage speed and thermal limits also shape the experience. Image generation and camera AI rely on different workloads again.

MediaTek also says its tenth-generation Ultra NPU 1090 and Generative AI Engine 3.0 expand low-precision computing capability. That should help manufacturers run more AI locally, where processing can be faster and more private than sending every request to a remote server. Whether an application actually stays on the device will depend on the model and the phone maker’s software.

Why 2nm Matters

A process label such as 2nm no longer describes a single physical dimension inside the chip. It identifies a generation of manufacturing technology. The practical goal is to fit more capable transistors into a given area while improving the balance between speed and energy use.

That balance is vital in a phone. A processor can post an impressive short benchmark and still disappoint if it becomes hot and throttles after several minutes. A genuinely better process can allow the same workload to use less power, or deliver more performance within the same thermal envelope.

MediaTek claims a substantial reduction in multi-core power consumption, but independent devices will need to be tested under sustained workloads. Cooling systems, battery sizes and manufacturer settings can make two phones using the same processor behave differently.

What Users May Actually Notice

The most visible improvements are likely to arrive through features rather than benchmark numbers. On-device assistants could summarise longer material with less waiting. Camera systems could apply more sophisticated scene recognition, noise reduction and video processing in real time. Games may maintain higher frame rates while consuming less energy.

Local AI also has a privacy advantage when data does not need to leave the phone, although “on-device” should never be assumed from a marketing label alone. Some features may combine local processing with cloud services. Buyers should check what runs locally, what is uploaded and whether advertised features require a subscription.

The Premium-Phone Battle

MediaTek has long been strong in high-volume Android phones, but the flagship market brings higher margins and greater influence over device design. The 9600 Pro is therefore both a technical product and a strategic signal: MediaTek wants its chips in phones competing at the very top of the market.

The challenge is ecosystem confidence. Manufacturers need stable drivers, long software support and dependable modem, camera and graphics performance. Consumers rarely buy a phone for the processor brand alone, yet poor efficiency or image processing can undermine the entire device.

What To Watch Before Buying

Do not judge the Dimensity 9600 Pro by launch slides. Wait for retail phones and look for sustained performance tests, battery endurance, camera comparisons and thermal measurements. Check whether the headline AI features work offline, which languages they support and how much storage they require.

If independent testing confirms the efficiency claims, the most important benefit may not be a spectacular chatbot demonstration. It may be a phone that performs difficult tasks without rapidly draining its battery or becoming uncomfortably warm. That is the point at which a 2nm process stops being an engineering milestone and becomes a consumer advantage.
