Will, Jay, Simon and Neil are officially back. Netflix has confirmed that production has begun in the UK on The Inbetweeners 3, reuniting Simon Bird, James Buckley, Joe Thomas and Blake Harrison more than a decade after the four friends were last together in a feature film.

It is not simply a spiritual reboot or a new cast using The Inbetweeners name. This is a direct continuation of the original sitcom and its two films, with creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley returning to write and direct. Production started on September 7, 2026, meaning one of Britain's biggest modern comedy franchises is now genuinely back rather than merely being discussed.

All Four Original Inbetweeners Are Returning

Simon Bird will return as Will McKenzie, James Buckley as Jay Cartwright, Blake Harrison as Neil Sutherland and Joe Thomas as Simon Cooper. Netflix's announcement confirms all four as the central returning cast, ending years of contradictory comments about whether another reunion would ever happen.

That matters because The Inbetweeners was built almost entirely around the chemistry between those four characters. Replacing one of them or attempting a next-generation reboot would have produced something fundamentally different. Instead, Netflix is bringing back the same friendship — except the teenagers who once worried about sixth-form parties, girlfriends and embarrassing parents are now men approaching middle age.

Morris and Beesley are also back in control of the story. Their involvement gives the film a direct creative connection to the original three-series run between 2008 and 2010 and the feature films released in 2011 and 2014. Netflix describes the new movie specifically as a continuation of that existing story.

What Is The Inbetweeners 3 Actually About?

This is the biggest question — and Netflix is deliberately not answering it yet.

There is currently no officially released plot synopsis for The Inbetweeners 3. Netflix has confirmed the cast, writers, directors and production team, but it has not revealed why the four friends reunite, where the story takes place, whether they have families or what disaster sends them back into each other's lives.

That distinction is important because speculation around an adult version of The Inbetweeners has circulated for years. A film about Will, Jay, Simon and Neil dealing with marriage, divorce, children, careers or some form of disastrous middle-aged trip would make obvious narrative sense, but none of those scenarios has yet been confirmed by Netflix.

Joe Thomas previously suggested that a successful return would need the characters to retain the delusion that made them funny in the first place rather than suddenly becoming sensible adults. That gives perhaps the clearest clue to how a modern Inbetweeners could work: they may be older, but they probably cannot be allowed to become dramatically wiser.

The central challenge is therefore fascinating. The original programme drew its comedy from four teenagers who desperately wanted to appear older, more sexually successful and more socially competent than they really were. The new film has to discover what happens when those same personalities have had another decade to accumulate jobs, relationships, responsibilities and opportunities to humiliate themselves.

The Yellow Fiat Is Back

Netflix has already given fans one enormous piece of nostalgia.

The announcement teaser puts the four characters back inside Simon's infamous yellow Fiat Cinquecento. The ageing car initially refuses to start before finally spluttering into life and driving away, while a large number three appears on the rear window.

It is a deliberately simple reveal, but the symbolism is difficult to miss. Rather than introducing a radically reinvented Inbetweeners, the first footage reconnects the new film with one of the most recognisable objects from the television series.

It may also tell us something about the tone. Putting four considerably older men back into the tiny yellow car immediately creates the same mixture of nostalgia, embarrassment and absurdity that powered the original programme. Netflix could have announced the film with a polished new setting. Instead, the first image is essentially the lads trying to get their old life started again.

What Happened the Last Time We Saw Them?

The television series ended in 2010 after three series following the four boys through Rudge Park Comprehensive. The first film then took them to Malia in 2011 after they finished school, while The Inbetweeners 2 reunited them for an increasingly disastrous Australian adventure in 2014.

The second movie therefore remains the last proper fictional chapter of their story. Twelve years will have passed between that film and the beginning of production on The Inbetweeners 3.

That gap gives Morris and Beesley considerable freedom. The film does not need to explain every year of the characters' lives. It can instead drop viewers into four very different adult situations and use their reunion to expose what has — or perhaps has not — changed.

There is also a huge generational advantage. Many of the viewers who watched The Inbetweeners as teenagers are now roughly the same age as the characters. A programme originally built around the humiliations of adolescence now has an opportunity to attack marriage, work, parenting, ageing and the uncomfortable discovery that becoming an adult does not necessarily mean knowing what you are doing.

Which Other Characters Are Returning?

For now, Netflix has only formally announced the core four.

That means the return of characters including Charlotte Hinchcliffe, Carli D'Amato, Will's mother Polly McKenzie and former Rudge Park head of sixth form Mr Gilbert should not be treated as confirmed. Greg Davies, Emily Atack and other major supporting performers were not included in Netflix's initial cast announcement.

Emily Atack's absence has attracted particular attention because Charlotte was such a memorable part of the television series, but absence from the first announcement does not prove she will not appear. Netflix may simply be withholding additional casting.

Mr Gilbert would be another especially interesting return. The second film ended with the formidable former teacher becoming engaged to Will's mother, potentially making him part of Will's family if that storyline survived beyond 2014. Whether the new film picks that up remains unknown.

Why Has It Taken So Long?

A third film once looked extremely unlikely.

Members of the cast repeatedly expressed doubts about returning as they grew older, and that scepticism made sense. The fundamental joke of The Inbetweeners was that these were adolescent idiots attempting to survive adolescence. Simply asking forty-something actors to recreate teenage behaviour would have felt desperate rather than nostalgic.

The breakthrough appears to have been finding a reason for these characters to exist as adults. The new movie is not pretending that time stopped in 2014. Netflix's own announcement emphasises that the actors are returning after years away, while the teaser visibly embraces the absurdity of the older quartet climbing back into Simon's teenage car.

That could ultimately decide whether the revival works. The Inbetweeners 3 cannot merely repeat old jokes because the audience has aged with the characters. But changing them beyond recognition would destroy the dysfunctional chemistry people actually want to see again.

When Will The Inbetweeners 3 Be Released?

Netflix has not announced an official release date.

Production only began in the UK on September 7, 2026, and Netflix's initial announcement does not name a premiere month or even formally specify a release year.

A 2027 Netflix release is currently the realistic expectation and has been reported alongside the production announcement, but that should be treated as an expected window rather than an official dated Netflix commitment.

Feature-film production will need to be completed before editing, sound, music, visual finishing and Netflix's international marketing campaign. Unless production moves unusually quickly, the likelihood of the completed movie appearing during the remaining months of 2026 is therefore low.

The Inbetweeners Has One Huge Advantage This Time

Nostalgia alone can get people to press play. It cannot make the film good.

The more interesting opportunity is that Will, Jay, Simon and Neil were always flawed enough to remain funny long after leaving school. Will can still be painfully self-important. Jay can still lie about everything. Simon can still obsess over whatever relationship is currently destroying his dignity. Neil can still wander through disasters with an extraordinary lack of concern.

They no longer need to be teenagers for those traits to work.

The first teaser suggests Morris and Beesley understand that. Four older men squeeze back into the same battered yellow car, it refuses to start, and eventually the thing lurches back onto the road. It is nostalgia, certainly — but it is also an unusually appropriate metaphor for the entire revival.

Twelve years after The Inbetweeners 2, the engine is running again. Now Netflix has to prove the lads still have somewhere worth going.
