Two workers have been rescued alive from a hydropower tunnel in Nepal nine days after catastrophic floods tore through the Himalayan region, delivering an extraordinary breakthrough in a disaster where thousands of people remain missing. The rescues at the Upper Trishuli 3A project provide the clearest evidence yet that people cut off deep underground may still be alive long after the initial floodwaters struck.

The first worker was brought out on Friday during an operation at the Trishuli 3A tunnel, with Nepal Army spokesperson Brigadier General Raja Ram Basnet confirming that he had been found alive. A second rescue was announced shortly afterwards by Nepalese lawmaker Shri Ram Neupane as operations continued at the site.

Two Survivors Emerge From Trishuli 3A

Images from the rescue showed the first survivor covered in mud as emergency workers carried him from the tunnel before medical personnel assessed his condition. That sight carries enormous significance because the floods struck on August 26, meaning he had survived underground for nine days before rescuers reached him.

Upper Trishuli 3A has become one of the central locations in Nepal's vast tunnel-rescue operation. Before Friday's breakthrough, the government said a 93-member rescue team was working at the project alongside a specialist Chinese tunnel-rescue team, with additional personnel and equipment being deployed as crews tried to penetrate blocked underground sections.

The operation has involved far more than simply entering an open tunnel. Floodwater, mud, rocks and debris have blocked approaches and transformed underground infrastructure into potentially lethal spaces, while rescuers have been trying to drain water, pump air and create routes through obstructed sections.

Why Finding Them Alive Matters So Much

The survival of two workers after nine days changes the psychological equation surrounding the remaining tunnel searches. As time passed, every additional day underground made hopes of finding survivors more fragile, particularly where rescuers had been unable to establish direct communication.

Yet hydropower tunnels are not necessarily uniform flooded tubes. Some contain larger chambers, access areas and underground rooms where workers could potentially have escaped the main surge, while pockets of air or dry ground could provide temporary refuge.

That possibility has been one reason authorities have continued major underground operations rather than treating the missing solely as a recovery mission. Friday's rescues now provide concrete evidence that survival after more than a week is possible in at least one of the tunnel systems.

It does not mean everyone still missing underground is alive. Conditions vary sharply between projects, and rescuers still do not know precisely where many workers were when the flood struck. But it gives the remaining operations a renewed urgency: some of those inaccessible spaces may still contain people waiting to be reached.

Hundreds of Workers Are Still Missing

The scale of the tunnel emergency is immense. Around 900 workers have been reported missing across 12 hydropower projects in Nepal, with roughly 500 believed to have been trapped within tunnels, according to figures cited by local authorities.

The wider disaster is vastly larger still. By Friday, Nepal's disaster management agency was reporting at least 1,259 deaths and more than 5,000 people missing following the August 26 floods. Casualty and missing-person figures have continued to change as isolated areas are reached and authorities reconcile lists.

Only a day earlier, Nepal's government had put the verified toll at 1,204 recovered bodies and around 4,200 people missing, while saying 11,993 people had been rescued. That rapid movement in the figures illustrates both the scale of the catastrophe and the difficulty of establishing a definitive picture across devastated mountain valleys.

The floods sent huge volumes of water, mud and debris through Rasuwa and into connected river systems, destroying settlements and critical infrastructure. Nepal's government says the precise causes and evolution of the unprecedented event are still being investigated.

A major ice-and-rock collapse high in the Himalayas is being examined as a likely element in the disaster, but officials have cautioned against treating the precise sequence as conclusively established. A Rescue Operation Stretching Across the Himalayas

Nepal has mobilised thousands of security personnel alongside international specialists as the response shifts deeper into difficult tunnel systems. Specialist teams from India, China and South Korea have been assigned to different hydropower locations and are working alongside the Nepali Army.

At Upper Trishuli 3A, Chinese specialists have been supporting Nepalese crews. Indian teams have been deployed around Langtang and Chilime, while a South Korean team has been working at Upper Trishuli 1.

The government said more than 21,000 members of Nepal's security forces had been mobilised across the wider disaster zone for search, rescue and relief operations. The challenge extends far beyond the tunnels: roads, bridges, settlements and hydropower infrastructure have been heavily damaged, making movement of heavy rescue equipment exceptionally difficult.

Previous tunnel operations have already produced remarkable results. On August 29, Nepal's state broadcaster said the army rescued 208 people, including 43 foreign nationals, from a Trishuli hydropower tunnel after the floods.

That earlier mass rescue happened much closer to the initial disaster. Friday's breakthrough carries a different significance because nine days had now passed.

What Happens Next

The immediate task at Trishuli 3A is to keep pushing farther into the tunnel system while the possibility of additional survivors remains credible. The two rescues mean crews cannot assume that inaccessible sections have become unsurvivable purely because of the time elapsed.

Rescuers elsewhere face the same calculation. Teams will continue clearing debris, creating openings, supplying ventilation where possible and searching underground chambers while authorities attempt to establish where hundreds of missing workers may have sheltered.

Every hour still matters, but Friday's discovery has fundamentally changed the tone of the operation. Nine days after one of the worst disasters in modern Nepalese history, two people have emerged alive from beneath the devastation — and somewhere inside the remaining tunnels, rescuers now have stronger reason to believe others could still be waiting.
