Russia Turns Kyiv Into a 24-Hour Battlefield as New Drone Tactics Push Air Defences to the Limit
For years, people in Kyiv learned the grim rhythm of Russia's air war. The worst attacks usually came after dark, sirens dragged people from their beds, air defences fought through the night and the city tried to function again the following morning. That rhythm is now breaking down.
Russia has shifted towards sustained waves of attacks across both daylight and night-time hours, particularly against Kyiv, creating a form of almost continuous aerial pressure that Ukrainian officials say is designed to wear down civilian life as well as the country's defences. Faster jet-powered drones are helping Moscow make that strategy increasingly practical.
The Old Rhythm of the Air War Is Breaking Down
The change became particularly visible from August 27, when Russian forces began conducting repeated daytime and overnight drone waves against Kyiv. Instead of concentrating most of the pressure into a major overnight salvo, Russia has increasingly spread aircraft across a much longer period of the day.
That distinction matters. A city can adapt, however painfully, to predictable periods of danger. It becomes much harder when air-raid warnings repeatedly interrupt commuting, schools, shops, offices, public transport and basic administration throughout the working day.
The effect has become visible across Kyiv. Residents have repeatedly been forced into shelters during ordinary daytime activities, while businesses and transport operators are having to rethink procedures built around the assumption that the most serious aerial threat would arrive primarily at night. Recent Russian strikes have wounded civilians and damaged residential, educational and commercial locations in and around the capital.
This is therefore more than another increase in attack frequency. Russia appears to be changing the rhythm of the threat itself.
Jet-Powered Drones Have Changed the Equation
One reason Moscow can sustain this new pattern is technological.
Russia has rapidly increased its use of jet-powered Geran drones. Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Colonel Yuriy Ihnat said Russia launched more than 2,800 jet-powered drones during August and that they represented roughly 56 per cent of Russian long-range drone launches that month.
Their speed creates a significant defensive problem.
Ukraine has become highly effective at destroying conventional piston-powered attack drones, with interception rates estimated at between 90 and 95 per cent. Against the newer jet-powered systems, Ihnat put the interception rate at roughly 60 per cent.
The difference changes the economics of the attack.
Slow drones can often be pursued by mobile firing groups or specialised interceptor drones. Faster aircraft compress the defender's reaction time and can require more capable interception systems. Russia therefore does not necessarily need to multiply the total number of aircraft dramatically to generate greater pressure.
During one Russian attack overnight into September 2, Ukrainian forces reported 174 drones and other unmanned weapons, with roughly half of the Shahed-type force described as jet-powered. Ukrainian forces said they destroyed 138 drones and three Banderol loitering munitions, but strikes were still recorded at 16 locations.
The technological contest behind Russia's expanding drone war is becoming one of the defining battles of the conflict.
Russia Does Not Need More Drones to Create More Pressure
The most important feature of the strategy may be how efficiently it creates exhaustion.
Analysis of the latest Russian strike pattern indicates Moscow is not necessarily launching dramatically more long-range weapons overall. Instead, it is distributing comparable numbers across a greater proportion of the day.
For Ukrainian air-defence crews, that creates a brutal problem.
A concentrated overnight raid eventually ends. Crews can rotate, ammunition can be moved, equipment can be inspected and personnel can rest before the next attack. A series of smaller but persistent waves can prevent that recovery cycle.
Russia can launch drones, force Ukrainian systems to activate, allow the immediate attack to fade and then send another wave.
That creates an attritional contest in which time becomes a weapon.
Ukrainian authorities have already been examining how railways, logistics and traffic across Kyiv should operate during prolonged air alerts. The concern is not simply whether an individual drone reaches its target but whether repeated warnings can gradually make a modern capital harder to operate.
Russia has previously demonstrated how enormous drone salvos can overload Ukraine's defensive system. The new tactic attacks the same vulnerability in a different way: not only overwhelming the defence with scale, but stretching it through time.
The Real Target Is the Functioning of the City
This is where the military and psychological effects begin to merge.
A drone does not need to hit a building to disrupt Kyiv. Its presence can trigger an alert, stop activity, send civilians towards shelters, alter train movements and force air-defence personnel into action.
Repeat that process several times during the same day and the cumulative consequences become substantial.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy explicitly described Russia's tactics on September 2 as attempts to "wear down civilian life" and said the government was working on measures to keep logistics, businesses and supplies functioning under sustained attack.
That description captures the wider strategic danger.
The objective of aerial warfare is not always simply to destroy the object underneath the weapon. It can also be to force the defender to spend resources, change behaviour and live permanently around the possibility of another strike.
For ordinary residents, the distinction between a military attack and psychological attrition becomes increasingly meaningless when both produce the same daily question: when will the next siren sound?
Kyiv's vulnerability has already been exposed by previous complex Russian missile and drone barrages. The difference now is that the pressure no longer has to wait for darkness.
Ukraine Is Racing to Adapt
Kyiv is not standing still.
Zelenskyy convened Ukraine's Supreme Commander-in-Chief's Staff on September 3 with a specific focus on accelerating production of interceptors capable of destroying jet-powered Shahed-type drones. Ukrainian businesses are also being encouraged to participate in the production of air-defence systems.
Germany has meanwhile committed additional air-defence missiles, according to the Ukrainian presidency, while Kyiv continues requesting further packages from its partners.
Ukraine has also developed the Alexa Spatium jet-powered interceptor, designed to engage Russia's Geran-3, Geran-4 and Geran-5 drones among other targets. If systems like it can be manufactured cheaply and at scale, they could begin shifting the economics of the air war back towards the defender.
That race is now critical.
Using an expensive surface-to-air missile against a comparatively cheap unmanned aircraft is sustainable only for so long. Ukraine therefore needs interception systems that can match Russia not merely technologically, but industrially.
The side capable of producing drones or interceptors faster, cheaper and in greater numbers gains an advantage that conventional measures of air power do not fully capture.
A War of Exhaustion Above Kyiv
Russia's new tactics do not mean Ukrainian air defences are collapsing. They show instead how Moscow is searching for ways around the defensive adaptations Ukraine has spent years developing.
When slow drones became easier to destroy, Russia built faster ones. When large overnight attacks became predictable, it began spreading pressure into daylight. When Ukraine improved interception rates, Russia sought to make each interception harder and each alert more disruptive.
That cycle is becoming the defining feature of the air war.
It also reveals something important about the wider conflict. Russia does not need a dramatic breakthrough on the ground to increase the pressure on Ukraine. It can attempt to make the country's cities more expensive to defend, harder to operate and psychologically exhausting to inhabit while continuing conventional operations hundreds of kilometres away.
Ukraine is attempting exactly the opposite against Russia through its own expanding deep-strike drone campaign, increasingly pushing the consequences of the war into Russian industrial and logistical territory.
The result is an increasingly industrialised contest in which neither darkness nor distance offers the protection it once did.
For Kyiv, the immediate threat is clear. The city spent years learning how to survive dangerous nights; Russia is now trying to make every hour part of the battlefield. Whether that strategy succeeds may depend less on one spectacular attack than on whether Ukraine can manufacture enough affordable interceptors to prevent constant pressure from becoming the new normal.
